구본창 (1953)
具本昌

구본창은 1953년 서울에서 태어난 대한민국을 대표하는 사진작가이다. 연세대학교 경영학과를 졸업한 뒤, 독일 함부르크 Fachhochschule Hamburg에서 사진디자인 전공으로 디플롬 학위를 취득하였다.

1985년 귀국 후 작가이자 전시 기획자로서 한국 현대사진의 기틀을 다지는 데 중추적 역할을 했으며, 간결하면서도 미니멀한 사진 언어로 한국 사진계에 독자적인 위치를 확립했다. 그 공로를 인정받아, 2025년 사진작가 최초로 삼성 호암상을 수상하였다.

이 책에 실린 대부분의 사진은 1980년부터 1985년까지 작가의 독일 유학 시절에 촬영된 것이며, 이후 1995년까지 여러 차례 유럽 여행을 하며 찍은 사진들이 추가로 구성되었다.

그의 작품은 샌프란시스코 현대미술관(SFMOMA), 휴스턴 미술관(MFAH), 교토 카히츠칸 미술관, 서울시립미술관, 삼성 리움 미술관 등 세계 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있으며, 작품집으로는 한길아트 ‘숨’, ‘탈’, ‘백자’, 일본 Rutles ‘Vessel’, ‘Everyday Treasures’, 컬처그라퍼 '공명의 시간' 등이 있다.

2001년 삼성 로댕갤러리, 2002년 미국 피바디 에섹스 뮤지엄, 2006년 국제 갤러리, 2010년 필라델피아 미술관, 2021년 중국 Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, 2023년 서울시립미술관, 2024년 광주 국립아시아문화전당 등 국내 외에서 다수의 개인전을 통해 한국 사진예술의 위상을 세계에 알리고 있다.

Koo Bohnchang, born in Seoul in 1953, is one of South Korea’s leading photographers. After graduating with a degree in Business Administration from Yonsei University, he pursued photography at the Fachhochschule Hamburg in Germany, earning a Diploma in Photography Design.

After returning to Korea in 1985, he played a pivotal role in shaping the foundations of contemporary Korean photography as both an artist and exhibition curator. Koo established a unique presence in the Korean art scene through his concise and minimalist photographic language. In recognition of his contributions, he became the first photographer to be awarded the prestigious Samsung Ho-Am Prize in 2025.

Most of the photographs featured in this book were taken between 1980 and 1985 during his studies in Germany, and were later supplemented with images captured during several trips to Europe up until 1995.

His works are collected in major institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), the Kahitsukan Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, and the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art. He has also published several photobooks, including Breath, Masks, and Vessels (Hangil Art, Korea), as well as Vessel and Everyday Treasures (Rutles, Japan), and Moments of Resonance (Culturegrapher, Korea).

Koo has held numerous solo exhibitions both in Korea and internationally, including at Samsung Rodin Gallery (2001), the Peabody Essex Museum in the United States (2002), Kukje Gallery (2006), the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2010), Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in China (2021), Seoul Museum of Art (2023), and the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju (2024), further elevating the global stature of Korean photographic art.
