Water melts soap and creates a lather with which to wash away dirt from the human body. Sometimes it creates the poetic form of a bubble, but the central fact to soap is that it never ceases to disappear.
It’s surprising, then, that one rarely witnesses a soap bar’s end. Worn down by use, or dropped accidentally down the drain, or melded to a new bar, it simply disappears.
Nobody notices it happen. To become bubbles and be washed away is, after all, the work of soap.
Soap and stone bear a certain resemblance. But if a stone can be likened to an hermit philosopher, then soap is a faceless worker.
A tool takes on a sheen and character when used every day, turning into a great artist or artisan, or a stubborn old man.
Soap, however, is different. Its concrete expression is its effervescent spheres.
Its way of living is its way of dying – man and his object both are washed away. Flowers and clouds are beautiful, and so too man-made objects such as spoons and bridges. But of all the beautiful things in the world, why would a photographer choose soap as the subject of his vision?
The reason lies in the deep connection between soap’s existence and photography’s nature.
Photographs do not capture the past or the present as we know them, nor do they reproduce something that doesn’t exist. They only trap what is front of one’s eyes in the present. They do so as all things, including ourselves, are continually in the midst of disappearing.
The work of the photographer is to reveal each moment as it disappears. This is where the work of soap and the work of the photographer meet.

일상의 보석

찬 물에 비누로 손을 씻으니 이제 봄이로구나.     호간시 (方眼子)

물은 비누를 녹여서 거품을 만들고 우리는 이 거품으로 몸의 때를 씻어낸다. 때로는 비누의 거품이 서정적인 형태로 나타나서 경이로움을 자아내기도 하지만, 비누에 관한 가장 중요한 사실은 비누는 결코 멈추는 법이 없이 끊임없이 소멸된다는 것이다. 그렇다면, 우리가 비누의 마지막 순간을 목격하는 경우가 거의 없다는 것은 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없다. 거의 다 써서 닳아지거나, 실수로 하수구에 빠뜨리거나, 또는 새 비누에 합해 버리거나, 그냥 없어져 버리는 것이다. 아무도 주의하지 않는다. 비누는 결국 거품이 되어 씻겨나간다. 비누와 돌멩이는 비슷한 점이 있다. 돌멩이를 은자라 한다면 비누는 얼굴 없는 노동자라고 말할 수 있다. 돌멩이는 연장을 사용하여 광채와 개성이 넘치는 예술가, 장인, 또는 완고한 노인의 상으로 변화시킬 수 있다. 그러나 비누는 그렇지 않다. 비누에서 찾을 수 있는 구체적인 표현이라면 거품이 만들어 내는 동그라미일 뿐이다. 비누에서 살아가는 행위는 곧 죽어가는 행위이다 – 인간과 인간의 사물 모두가 씻겨져 없어진다. 꽃과 구름 등 자연 풍경은 아름답다. 그리고 숟가락이나 강 위의 다리 등과 같이 인간이 만들어낸 사물들 또한 아름답다. 세상의 모든 아름다운 것들 중에서 한 사진작가가 비누를 자신의 작품의 대상으로 선택하였다. 왜 그랬을까? 그 이유는 비누의 존재와 사진이라는 예술활동의 본질간에 깊은 연관이 있기 때문이다. 사진에서 포착되는 것은 우리가 알고 있는 과거나 현재, 또는 실제로 존재하지 않는 사물이나 현상이 아니라 우리 자신들을 포함하여 끊임없이 사라져 가고 있는 것들이다. 사진작가가 하는 일은 사라지는 각각의 순간을 표현하는 것이다. 이 점에서 비누와 사진작가의 작업은 공통점을 가진다. 구본창은 우리가 일상생활에서 항상 사용하는 비누에서 보석과 같은 아름다움을 발견한다.
